Classée depuis 1999 à l’UNESCO, la juridiction de St-Émilion est reconnue comme « un exemple remarquable d’un paysage viticole historique qui a survécu intact » et qui « illustre de manière exceptionnelle la culture intensive de la vigne à vin dans une région délimitée avec précision ». Lorsqu’on se balade dans St-Émilion, on se rend bien compte que la ville est liée au vin; il y a des boutiques et des caves à vins dans chaque rue ! St-Émilion, c’est aussi un patrimoine et une spécialité que l’on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs : les macarons !
L’église monolithe
Rattachée au diocèse de Bordeaux, elle est la plus grande église monolithe du monde ! Le lieu aurait été consacré comme « lieu de culte » entre la fin du XIème et le début du XIIème siècle. Elle est classé comme Monument Historique en 1886, son clocher le sera en 1907.
La collégiale
Classée Monument Historique en 1840, sa construction remonte au XIIème siècle avec la communauté des chanoines de St-Augustin. Le cloître est rattaché à l’église au XVème siècle, il vaut vraiment le détour avec ses belles colonnes géminées !
La tour du Roy
Commandé par le roi d’Angleterre Henri III, ce donjon-citadelle est le seul de style roman encore visible en Gironde. De son sommet, la vue sur la cité et ses alentours est tout simplement magnifique ! Elle est aujourd’hui intrinsèquement liée au monde viticole car on y déclare « le jugement du vin nouveau » en juin et « le ban des vendanges » en septembre.
Le monde viticole
Comment ne pas parler du vin lorsqu’on évoque St-Émilion ? Le vin et les vignes de façon générale représentent aujourd’hui plus de la moitié de l’économie de la commune, autant dire que ce n’est pas négociable ! Placés sous la protection d’une AOC, les vins de St-Émilion sont le résultat d’un assemblage de 3 cépages : le merlot, le cabernet franc et le cabernet sauvignon. La juridiction classée au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO ne produit que du vin rouge.

St-Émilion, a wine city at the UNESCO
Classed a the UNESCO since 1999, the St-Émilion jurisdiction is known as « the Jurisdiction of Saint Emilion is an outstanding example of an historic vineyard landscape that has survived intact » and which « illustrates in an exceptional way the intensive cultivation of grapes for wine production in a precisely defined area ». Let me introduce you to the city !
When we have a walk in St-Émilion, we understand the town is deeply linked with the wine world; there’s shops and wine caves in every street ! St-Émilion, it also is a patrimony and a speciality you won’t find anywhere else : the macarons !
The monolithic church
Incorporated to the Bordeaux diocèse, it’s the world biggest monolithic church ! The place would have been sacred between the end of the XIth century and the beginning of the XIIth. It’s classed as a Historic Monument since 1886, the bell town has been classed in 1907.
The collegiate church
Classed Monument Historique in 1840, its construction began during the XIIth century with the community of the Augustinian canons. The cloister is close to the XVth century church, it has to be seen with its geminated columns !
The Roy tower
Ordered by the Henri III, King of England, this tower is the only Romanesque style building still visible in Gironde. From its top, the view on the city and its surroundings is simply incredible ! Today, it is intrinsically linked to the world of wine because it declares « New Wine Judgment » in June and « Grape Harvest » in September.
The wine world
How do not talk about wine when we thought of St Émilion ? Today, the wine and the vines represent more than the half of the town economy. Placed under an AOC, the St Émilion wines are the result of a blend of 3 grape varieties : the Merlot, the Cabernet franc and the Cabernet sauvignon. The jurisdiction is classed at the World Heritage of UNESCO and products only red wine.
